The Bats Wing Coral Tree is a flowering tree from Australia that has amazing, unusually-shaped leaves. It is an Erythrina species and is related to more common and widely known Erythrinas such as the native coral bean and the exotic coral tree and tiger’s claw tree. Live other Erythrinas, it has trifoliate leaves with 3 leaflets but the leaflets of the bats wing coral tree have a unique shape. The leaflets have 2 long, spreading lateral lobes so that the leaflets resemble a bat with outstretched wings in flight. The leaves are grayish-green and are deciduous. The flowers are scarlet or orange-red and they appear on the leafless branches before the new leaves emerge. Seeds are bright red. All parts of the plant are toxic. It grows in a wide variety of soils as long as the soils are well-drained. It likes an open, sunny position. It is a very hardy plant once established. Hardy in zones 9-12.

Growing Instructions for the Bats Wing Coral Tree

The seeds have a hard seed coat that has to be treated, or scarified, in order for water to enter the seeds so that they can sprout. 1. Scarify the seeds by nicking or sanding the seed coat. The seeds can be sanded with sandpaper, a nail file or an emery board. 2. Soak the seeds in water for several hours. 3. It likes well-drained soil. Put a mixture of potting soil and sand or perlite into a pot with drainage holes in the base. 4. Sow the seeds 1 cm deep. 5. Water the seeds. The seeds germinate in 10-21 days at 68-77 degrees F. 6. When the plants are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
