Cleistocactus strausii, commonly known as the Silver Torch or Wooly Torch, is a species of cactus native to Bolivia and Argentina. It belongs to the Cactaceae family and is known for its striking appearance and relatively easy care requirements, making it a popular choice among cactus enthusiasts.

Key features of Cleistocactus strausii include:

Appearance: This cactus has a columnar growth habit with branching stems covered in dense white wool, giving it a silvery appearance. The stems are ribbed with numerous areoles along them. The mature plant can reach heights of up to 10 feet (3 meters).

Spines: Along with the white wool, Cleistocactus strausii also has spines emerging from the areoles. The spines are typically brown to black in color and can be quite sharp. They serve as protection against herbivores.

Flowers: During the blooming season, Cleistocactus strausii produces vibrant red-orange flowers that emerge from the top of the stems. The flowers are tubular in shape and are attractive to pollinators such as hummingbirds.

Cultural Requirements: Like many cacti, Cleistocactus strausii prefers well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. It is drought-tolerant but can benefit from occasional watering during the growing season. However, it is essential to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. During the winter months, it's best to reduce watering to mimic its natural habitat.

Propagation: Cleistocactus strausii can be propagated from seeds or stem cuttings. Stem cuttings should be allowed to callus for a few days before planting them in well-draining soil.
