Arisaema tortuosum, also known as the whipcord cobra lily or the Indian cobra lily, is a species of flowering plant in the Araceae family. It is native to the Himalayan region, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet, where it grows in forested areas at elevations of 2,000 to 3,500 meters (6,600 to 11,500 feet).

This striking plant is known for its unusual and dramatic appearance. It produces a single, large, tripartite leaf that is deeply divided into three leaflets and can reach lengths of up to 60 centimeters (2 feet). The leaf emerges from an underground tuber and is often mottled or patterned with shades of green and purple.

The most distinctive feature of Arisaema tortuosum is its inflorescence, which consists of a hooded spathe surrounding a central spadix. The spathe is typically green or purplish-brown and often striped or mottled with lighter markings. The spadix protrudes from the center of the spathe and is covered in small flowers. The overall appearance of the inflorescence is said to resemble the hood of a cobra, hence the common name "cobra lily."

In addition to its ornamental value, Arisaema tortuosum has cultural significance in some regions where it is native. It is sometimes used in traditional medicine by indigenous peoples, although its medicinal properties and uses vary among different cultures.

Cultivating Arisaema tortuosum can be challenging outside of its native range, as it requires cool temperatures, high humidity, and well-drained, humus-rich soil. However, it can be grown successfully in temperate gardens with the right conditions, where it adds a touch of exotic beauty and intrigue.

Growing Instructions for the Whipcord Cobra Lily

The seeds have a period of dormancy. They can be planted outdoors in the fall or winter for spring germination or they can be cold stratified to simulate winter conditions and to break their dormancy at any time of the year.  1. Place the seeds in a plastic bag and seal it. Store the bag in a refrigerator for 3-4 months. 2. The seeds like rich, moist soil. Fill a pot with potting soil. 3. Sow the seeds on the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. 4. Water the container. 5. Put the pot in a moist, shady location. 6. Water the pot regularly so that the soil is moist but not wet. The seeds may take up to 4 months to germinate. 7. The seedlings can be transplanted when they are a few inches tall.
