Nandina domestica, commonly known as heavenly bamboo or sacred bamboo, is an evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub native to East Asia, particularly China and Japan, prized for its ornamental beauty and multi-season interest. Despite its common name, it is not a true bamboo but belongs to the Berberidaceae family. This graceful plant typically grows 4 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide, featuring upright, cane-like stems and finely divided, lacy foliage that resembles bamboo. Its delicate, compound leaves emerge in shades of pink and bronze in spring, turn green in summer, and transition to brilliant red or burgundy in fall and winter, especially in colder regions. In late spring to early summer, Nandina produces clusters of small, white flowers with yellow anthers, which are followed by bright red berries that persist through winter, providing a vibrant contrast against the foliage and attracting birds. Tolerant of a wide range of soils and environmental conditions, Nandina is drought-resistant once established and is commonly used in landscapes as a foundation plant, hedge, or accent shrub. Nandina domestica is a versatile and visually appealing choice for many gardeners seeking year-round interest.
Growing Instructions
The seeds have a period of dormancy. They can be planted outdoors in the fall or winter for spring germination or they can be cold stratified to simulate winter conditions and to break their dormancy at any time of the year. 1. Place the seeds in a plastic bag and seal it. Store the bag in a refrigerator for 2-3 months. 2. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Fill a pot with a mixture of half potting soil and half sand or vermiculite. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet. 3. Sow the seeds on the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. 4. Water the seeds. 5. Put the pot in a warm, sunny area. 6. The seedlings can be transplanted when they are a few inches tall.
