Lantana camara is a vigorous, woody perennial shrub or subshrub widely grown for its bright, long-lasting flower clusters and exceptional tolerance of heat and drought. In warm climates it typically forms a dense, spreading mound about 3 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide, though some trailing or groundcover types remain lower at 1 to 2 feet high while spreading up to 6 feet or more. The rough, slightly hairy, ovate leaves measure roughly 2 to 5 inches long, emit a strong aromatic scent when crushed, and are arranged oppositely along square stems. From late spring through frost, lantana produces rounded flower heads about 1 to 2 inches across, each composed of dozens of small tubular florets that often change color as they age, shifting through combinations of yellow, orange, red, pink, lavender, or white, adding continuous visual interest. Individual plants perform best in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily, and thrive in well-drained soils once established, showing remarkable drought tolerance with mature root systems extending more than a foot deep. Lantana camara is commonly used in borders, mass plantings, containers, and as a low hedge, where its rapid growth and sprawling habit can quickly fill space, often adding 12 to 24 inches of growth in a single growing season.
