White Stopper is an evergreen, upright shrub or a small tree with dark green leaves, fragrant white flowers and edible, dark red or black fruits. It is one of Florida’s native tropical trees and it grows in coastal forests and thickets. It ranges from Central Florida and South Florida to the Caribbean region and Central America. It is one of the common understory trees of the tropical hammocks in South Florida. White Stopper is tolerant of wind, drought and salt and it is easy to grow. The leaves are thick, leathery and waxy and the new growth is pink or burgundy in color. The flowers are in small clusters in the leaf axils. They are produced throughout the year but mainly in the spring and summer. The flowers are followed by the fruits, which are round berries. The fruits are sweet and edible. The fruits are great for attracting birds. It has hard, strong wood that is used in cabinetry. White stopper has attractive foliage and fruits, is of modest size and appropriate as a residential street tree, in parking lot islands, small lawns, and as a screen or hedge. It is also grown as a bonsai plant.
