Tulbaghia violacea, commonly known as society garlic or sweet garlic, is a perennial, clump-forming herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. Native to southern Africa, this hardy species is admired for its ornamental appeal. It features narrow, strap-like, gray-green leaves that emit a distinctive garlic-like aroma when crushed. During the warm months, typically from late spring through autumn, the plant produces clusters of star-shaped, lilac to violet flowers atop slender stalks, adding vibrant color to gardens and landscapes. Tulbaghia violacea thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, showing remarkable drought tolerance once established. It is often grown in borders, containers, and rock gardens. Aside from its ornamental role, the leaves and flowers are edible and sometimes used as a garnish or mild garlic substitute in cooking. Easy to maintain and resilient to poor soils, heat, and minimal watering, Tulbaghia violacea is an excellent choice for low-maintenance, water-wise gardens.

Growing Instructions

1. It likes moist, well-drained soil. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet.
2. Put the seeds on the soil.
3. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil.
4. Water the seeds.
5. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade.
6. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
