Dillenia indica, commonly known as the elephant apple, is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and parts of the Indian subcontinent, valued for its foliage, large flowers, and distinctive fruits. This evergreen to semi-evergreen species typically grows 15–20 meters tall, forming a broad, rounded crown with thick, leathery, prominently veined leaves that give the tree a bold architectural presence. Its fragrant white flowers are large and showy, with crinkled petals that open widely before maturing into hefty, greenish-yellow, segmented fruits whose tough outer rind encloses aromatic, acidic pulp. These fruits are an important food source for wildlife—particularly elephants, which help disperse the seeds—and are also used by people in culinary preparations such as chutneys, curries, and preserves. Thriving in warm, humid climates, Dillenia indica prefers moist, well-drained soils and partial to full sunlight, making it a distinctive and culturally significant species in tropical landscapes and forests.
