Clethra acuminata, commonly known as mountain sweet pepperbush or cinnamon clethra, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the Appalachian Mountains of the southeastern United States. It is admired for its upright, spreading habit, typically reaching 8 to 12 feet tall, and for its fragrant summer flowers that draw pollinators. In mid- to late summer, it produces clusters of small, white, bottlebrush-like blooms with a spicy-sweet fragrance, which attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and finely serrated, turning warm shades of yellow to orange in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Its smooth, reddish-brown bark peels slightly, offering subtle winter texture. Clethra acuminata thrives in moist, acidic soils and partial shade, making it well-suited to woodland gardens, naturalized areas, or along streamsides. Unlike its more commonly cultivated relative, Clethra alnifolia, mountain sweet pepperbush is less frequently used in landscaping but is equally valuable for its wildlife benefits and ornamental appeal.
