Matelea biflora, commonly known as two-flowered milkvine, is a twining perennial vine native to parts of the southern United States and Mexico, particularly thriving in dry, open woodlands, grasslands, and disturbed sites. It is notable for its slender, twining stems that can sprawl across the ground or climb nearby vegetation for support. Its small, heart-shaped leaves are arranged oppositely along the stem and can exude a milky sap when broken, a characteristic feature of the milkweed relatives. The plant earns its common name from its distinctive flowers, which typically appear in pairs—each flower a deep maroon to purplish-brown with five triangular, recurved lobes and a unique central corona, often attracting pollinators like flies and beetles with their slightly fetid odor. Blooming primarily in late spring to summer, Matelea biflora plays a role in supporting native insect populations, including specialized pollinators. Following pollination, it produces slender, horn-like seed pods (follicles) that eventually split open to release seeds equipped with silky tufts, allowing wind dispersal. Despite its inconspicuous nature, Matelea biflora is an important part of native plant communities, especially in dry prairie ecosystems, and adds to the biodiversity of the habitats it occupies.
