Aristolochia clematitis, commonly known as birthwort, is a perennial herbaceous vine belonging to the Aristolochiaceae family and native to southern and central Europe, extending into western Asia. Aristolochia clematitis typically grows 30 to 80 centimeters tall, with erect or slightly twining stems that support a lush covering of heart-shaped, light green leaves arranged alternately along the stem. The plant’s unusual, tubular, yellowish flowers appear in summer, often at the leaf axils, and are shaped like small flasks or pipes—a characteristic form of the genus Aristolochia. These flowers attracts small flies, which become temporarily trapped inside, facilitating pollination before being released once the flower matures. Following flowering, the plant produces ribbed, capsule-like fruits containing numerous small seeds that are dispersed by wind or water. Aristolochia clematitis thrives in sunny to partially shaded habitats, preferring well-drained, calcareous soils, and is often found along roadsides, riverbanks, and old fields.
