Eupatorium fistulosum, commonly known as the Queen of the Meadow or joe pye weed, is a tall, herbaceous perennial notable for its impressive stature and bold presence in moist landscapes. Mature plants typically reach between 4 and 10 feet in height, with a spread of about 2 to 4 feet, forming upright clumps. The hollow, purplish-green stems—one of its defining characteristics—can measure ½ to 1 inch in diameter, contributing to its structural strength. Leaves are arranged in whorls of 4 to 6 around the stem, each lance-shaped leaf measuring approximately 6 to 12 inches long and 1½ to 3 inches wide, with serrated edges and a slightly rough texture. The large, domed flower heads appear in mid to late summer, each cluster spanning 4 to 8 inches across, composed of numerous tiny mauve to dusty pink florets that individually measure only a fraction of an inch but collectively create a substantial visual mass. The root system consists of a fibrous crown with short rhizomes, spreading slowly to form colonies over time. This species combines vertical height, broad foliage, and sizable inflorescences to create a plant that is both architecturally striking and ecologically valuable in gardens and naturalized areas.
