Borago officinalis, commonly known as borage or starflower, is an annual herb in the Boraginaceae family, native to the Mediterranean region but widely cultivated and naturalized across temperate zones of the world. It grows rapidly to heights of 60 to 100 centimeters, with hollow, branching stems covered in fine, silvery hairs that give the plant a slightly rough texture. The leaves are large, oval, and coarsely textured, emitting a refreshing cucumber-like scent when crushed. Borage is best known for its star-shaped flowers, typically bright blue though occasionally pink or white, which bloom continuously from late spring through summer and are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. These flowers are edible and often used as colorful garnishes in salads, drinks, and desserts. The plant prefers full sun and well-drained soils and is valued not only as an ornamental but also as a companion plant in gardens, improving soil quality and deterring pests. Traditionally, Borago officinalis has been used in herbal medicine for its cooling, anti-inflammatory, and adrenal-supportive properties. The leaves and flowers were once used in teas and tonics to promote courage and relieve melancholy, a use reflected in its historical nickname “herb of gladness.” Modern applications focus on borage seed oil, which is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid known to support skin health, reduce inflammation, and balance hormones. With its attractive flowers, herbal significance, and ecological value to pollinators, borage remains a beloved and versatile plant in both traditional and contemporary gardens.
