Lespedeza capitata, commonly known as roundhead lespedeza or bush clover, is a perennial legume native to prairies, open woodlands, and savannas of eastern and central North America. This upright, clump-forming plant typically grows 3 to 5 feet tall and is characterized by its narrow, lance-shaped leaflets and dense, rounded flower heads that bloom in late summer. The small, creamy white flowers with purple markings are attractive to bees and other pollinators, while its seeds provide food for birds and wildlife. As a nitrogen-fixing species, Lespedeza capitata plays an important ecological role in improving soil fertility. It is drought-tolerant, thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, and is commonly used in prairie restoration, erosion control, and native landscaping projects. Its deep roots also make it valuable for stabilizing soils in degraded habitats.
Growing Instructions for the Round-Headed Bush Clover
The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Use a sterile seed starter mix, if available. It prevents soil fungi from damaging the seeds and the seedlings. If not available, then make a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Put the soil in a pot. 4. Put the seeds on the soil. 5. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 6. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet. 7. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun. 8. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
