Phacelia campanularia, commonly known as desert bluebells or desert bells, is a species of flowering plant native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It belongs to the genus Phacelia in the family Boraginaceae. Here are some key features of Phacelia campanularia:

Appearance: Desert bluebells are annual herbs that typically grow low to the ground, reaching heights of 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm). They have hairy, branching stems and deeply lobed, fern-like leaves that are grayish-green in color. The flowers of Phacelia campanularia are bell-shaped and usually blue or violet in color, although pink or white varieties are also available. The flowers form dense clusters at the ends of the stems and bloom from late winter to early spring.

Habitat: Desert bluebells are adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, where they can be found growing in sandy or rocky soils in desert scrub, chaparral, and grassland habitats. They are well-suited to the harsh conditions of desert ecosystems, tolerating drought and high temperatures.

Cultural Uses: Phacelia campanularia is primarily grown as an ornamental plant for its attractive flowers and low-maintenance nature. It is often used in xeriscaping and native plant landscaping projects, where it adds color and visual interest to dry gardens and landscapes. Desert bluebells are also valued for their ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making them a beneficial addition to wildlife gardens.

Growth and Care: Desert bluebells are relatively easy to grow from seed and require little maintenance once established. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil, and they are drought-tolerant once established. Seeds can be sown directly in the garden in the fall or early spring, and plants will typically self-sow in favorable conditions.

Growing Instructions for the California Bluebell

The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Use a sterile seed starter mix, if available. It prevents soil fungi from damaging the seeds and the seedlings. If not available, then make a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Put the soil in a pot. 4. Sow the seeds 1/16 of an inch deep.5. Water the soil so that it is moist but not wet. 7. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade. The seeds germinate in 1-4 weeks. 8. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
