Caesalpinia coriaria, commonly known as the Divi-divi Tree, is a distinctive, drought-tolerant leguminous tree native to the Caribbean, northern South America, and parts of Central America, where it has become an iconic symbol of wind-swept coastal landscapes. Typically growing 3–8 meters tall, though capable of reaching greater heights in favorable conditions, it is best known for its dramatically sculpted form: in areas of persistent trade winds, the trunk and branches are often bent into elegant, sweeping curves that give the tree its unmistakable silhouette. Its compound leaves are small, fine-textured, and sensitive to light, folding at night or in low illumination to conserve moisture. During the warm season, the tree produces clusters of small, pale yellow to cream flowers that are followed by its characteristic twisted, chestnut-brown seed pods, which curl into tight spirals as they mature. These pods are exceptionally rich in tannins and have been historically harvested for use in leather tanning and natural dye production, making the species economically significant throughout its native range. Adapted to arid, calcareous, and saline soils, Caesalpinia coriaria thrives in full sun, high heat, and minimal water, requiring almost no maintenance once established. Its graceful form, resilience, and cultural presence—particularly on the island of Aruba, where its wind-shaped silhouette is a national emblem—make it a valued ornamental tree for coastal, xeric, and Mediterranean-style landscapes.
