Oysterwood 5 Seeds Gymnanthes lucida

Oysterwood (Gymnanthes lucida), also known as crabwood, is an evergreen to semi-evergreen small tree native to the subtropical hammocks and coastal regions of southern Florida, as well as parts of the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. It develops an upright, compact form with glossy green leaves and can reach approximately 10–25 feet tall, occasionally growing taller under favorable conditions. The new foliage can have a reddish tint before maturing to deep green, giving the plant interest throughout the year. Its small yellowish-green flowers are produced along short spikes and are primarily wind-pollinated, while the rounded seed capsules mature from green to brown or dark brown and split open to release the seeds. Crabwood is well suited to warm climates, growing best in full sun to light shade and in well-drained soils with moderate moisture; it is particularly associated with limestone-based hardwood hammocks and other subtropical habitats. In Florida, it is primarily a South Florida species and is valued as a native small tree with attractive foliage and a naturally neat, columnar growth habit.
