Filipendula rubra, commonly known as queen-of-the-prairie, is a robust herbaceous perennial native to moist meadows, streambanks, and wetlands of eastern North America, admired for its bold foliage and airy plumes of pink flowers. Mature plants typically reach 4 to 8 feet tall with a spread of 3 to 5 feet, forming substantial clumps from thick rhizomatous roots that slowly expand over time. The compound leaves can measure 12 to 24 inches long, each composed of several sharply serrated leaflets, with individual leaflets often 3 to 6 inches long and 1 to 3 inches wide, giving the plant a lush, coarse texture. Flowering stems rise well above the foliage and bear large terminal panicles ranging from 6 to 18 inches tall and 6 to 12 inches wide, composed of hundreds of tiny blossoms roughly ¼ inch across, creating a soft, feathery appearance. Each flower carries long protruding stamens that enhance the plume-like effect and attract pollinators throughout early to midsummer. The sturdy, reddish stems are typically ¼ to ½ inch thick, supporting the large inflorescences even in breezy conditions. After blooming, seed heads develop into small dry fruits about ⅛ inch long, adding seasonal interest. Underground, the spreading root system may extend several feet outward, allowing colonies to establish in consistently moist soils. This species thrives best in full sun to partial shade and performs especially well in rain gardens or naturalized wetland plantings where its impressive height, broad foliage, and expansive floral plumes provide strong vertical structure and ornamental impact.
