Daphniphyllum macropodum, also known as Chinese laurel, is an elegant evergreen shrub or small tree admired for its lush foliage and adaptability in temperate gardens. Native to East Asia, including Japan, China, and Korea, it can grow from 10 to 25 feet tall, forming a rounded to spreading crown with smooth gray bark and stout, reddish young stems. The large, glossy, leathery leaves are a deep green above and paler beneath, often clustered toward the tips of branches, creating a bold, tropical effect. Each leaf is elliptic to obovate and supported by distinctive reddish petioles that lend a subtle color contrast. In spring, small greenish-yellow flowers appear in clusters, though they are not showy; being dioecious, male and female flowers occur on separate plants. Female plants produce attractive blue-black drupes in late summer to fall, which add further ornamental value. Daphniphyllum macropodum thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soils and prefers partial shade, though it tolerates full sun in cooler climates. It is appreciated for its tolerance of shade and urban conditions, making it suitable for use as a background shrub, specimen plant, or in woodland and courtyard gardens. Its evergreen leaves provide year-round interest, and the plant’s graceful habit contributes a serene, architectural quality to mixed borders and shaded landscapes.
