Sequoia sempervirens, commonly known as the coast redwood, is a towering evergreen tree native to the coastal regions of northern California and southern Oregon. It is renowned as the tallest tree species on Earth, with mature specimens regularly exceeding 90 meters (295 feet) in height and occasionally surpassing 115 meters (377 feet). The tree has a straight, massive trunk with reddish-brown, fibrous bark that can be up to 30 cm (12 inches) thick, providing protection from fire and insects. Its foliage consists of flat, needle-like leaves arranged spirally on branches, giving the tree a lush, green appearance year-round. Sequoia sempervirens produces small, woody cones that contain winged seeds, and it can also reproduce vegetatively through basal sprouting, enabling it to form dense groves. Thriving in the cool, moist, fog-laden climate of the Pacific coast, the species prefers well-drained, deep soils and benefits from consistent rainfall. Beyond its monumental size and beauty, the coast redwood plays a crucial ecological role, providing habitat for diverse wildlife, stabilizing soil, and storing vast amounts of carbon. Revered for its longevity—some individuals live over 2,000 years—Sequoia sempervirens is both an iconic natural wonder and a symbol of conservation efforts worldwide.
