Livistona decipiens, commonly known as the Ribbon Palm, is a palm tree that is native to Queensland, Australia. This medium-sized palm typically reaches heights of 10 to 20 feet (3–6 meters) with a slender, solitary trunk that is often marked by prominent leaf scars. Its most distinctive feature is its large, fan-shaped leaves, which can spread up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) across. The leaf segments are long and narrow, giving the palm a delicate, ribbon-like appearance as they cascade gracefully from the crown. Livistona decipiens produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers in the summer, which develop into small, blackish-blue fruits that are attractive to birds. Adaptable to a variety of soil types, it prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Its moderate growth rate and elegant, tropical aesthetic make it a popular choice for landscaping in gardens, parks, and large container plantings, where it adds both vertical interest and a sense of exotic sophistication. The species is also relatively hardy, tolerating short periods of drought once established, although it benefits from regular watering in prolonged dry spells.
