Gymnocladus dioicus is a large, slow-growing deciduous tree notable for its bold, coarse texture and open branching habit, typically reaching about 60 to 75 feet in height with a spread of 40 to 50 feet at maturity, though exceptional specimens can exceed 90 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 feet or more. Its stout, upright trunk supports thick, rugged branches that form a narrow to broadly oval crown, often appearing sparse due to its relatively late leaf-out and early leaf drop. The bipinnately compound leaves are among the largest of any North American tree, measuring roughly 2 to 3 feet long and 1 to 2 feet wide, with individual leaflets about 1 to 3 inches long. In late spring to early summer, small greenish-white flowers appear in clusters approximately 4 to 8 inches long, followed on female trees by thick, woody seed pods that are typically 5 to 10 inches long and about 1 to 2 inches wide. The bark is dark gray to brown and deeply ridged, adding to its rugged appearance, while the tree’s overall structure gives it a striking architectural presence in landscapes, especially during winter when its stout branches and large buds are fully visible.
