Syagrus schizophylla, commonly known as the Arikury Palm, is a small to medium-sized palm native to the coastal regions of eastern Brazil, where it grows in sandy soils and open scrublands. This elegant species typically reaches 6 to 15 feet in height and is easily recognized by its slender, solitary trunk covered in persistent leaf bases that give it a spiny, textured appearance. The gracefully arching, feather-like fronds emerge from the crown in a dense cluster, with each leaf divided into numerous narrow, bright green leaflets that lend the palm a fine, delicate texture. Syagrus schizophylla is valued for its compact size and ornamental appeal, making it an excellent choice for tropical or subtropical gardens, patios, and small landscapes. It thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers well-drained, sandy soils, displaying good drought tolerance once established but also benefiting from regular watering in dry periods. Creamy white to yellowish flowers appear in branched inflorescences, followed by small, round, orange to yellow fruits that are attractive to birds and wildlife. Closely related to the Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana), the Arikury Palm differs in its smaller stature and spiny leaf bases, which give it a more rugged yet charming character. Hardy to mild frosts and tolerant of coastal conditions, Syagrus schizophylla combines resilience with beauty, adding an exotic yet manageable tropical touch to both urban and naturalized landscapes.
