It has unlobed leaves, leaves with one lobe and leaves with three lobes. The twigs are green and smooth. The leaves and twigs are aromatic and have a pleasant scent. They are used to flavor gumbo. The foliage is a brilliant orange or red in the autumn. Hardy in zones 4-9.

Growing Instructions for the Sassafras

The seeds need to be planted when received or stored in a refrigerator until they are planted. The seeds have a period of dormancy and need to be cold stratified to break their dormancy. The seeds are stored in a refrigerator to maintain viability so they have already been stratified. 1. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Fill a pot with a mixture of half potting soil and half sand or vermiculite. 3. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil. 4. Cover the seeds with a layer of soil. 5. Water the container. 6. Put the pot in a warm, sunny area. 7. Water the pot regularly so that the soil is moist but not wet. 8. The seedlings can be transplanted when they are a few inches tall.
