Alluaudia procera, commonly known as the Madagascar ocotillo, is a distinctive spiny succulent tree native to the dry forests of southwestern Madagascar. In its natural habitat it typically grows 30–50 feet tall, though exceptional specimens may approach 60 feet in height, with a narrow trunk usually 12–20 inches in diameter and occasionally reaching up to about 24 inches thick in mature individuals. The upright trunk produces numerous vertical, wand-like branches that create a columnar crown often 10–20 feet wide. Along the stems occur paired conical spines generally 0.4–1 inch long, emerging from small cushion-like nodes that also produce round to oval leaves measuring roughly 0.4–1.2 inches long and about 0.2–0.8 inches wide; these leaves are typically shed during prolonged dry periods. The branches themselves may grow 10–20 feet long, contributing to the plant’s tall, architectural form. When flowering, the species develops small greenish-yellow blossoms approximately 0.1–0.2 inches across, which are followed by tiny seed capsules only a few hundredths of an inch in diameter. The plant’s tall, slender proportions, spine spacing of roughly 1–2 inches apart, and moderate canopy spread give it a striking, cactus-like silhouette despite being a member of the Didiereaceae rather than a true cactus.
