Polygonum aubertii, commonly known as Silver Lace Vine or Chinese fleeceflower, is a vigorous deciduous woody vine belonging to the Polygonaceae family. Native to China and parts of Asia, it is valued for its fast growth rate, delicate foliage, and cascading sprays of small, creamy white flowers that bloom in late summer to early fall.

Here are some key features and care tips for Polygonum aubertii:

Growth Habit: It is a fast-growing vine that can reach up to 20 to 30 feet (6 to 9 meters) in height and spread. It climbs by twining and can quickly cover a trellis, fence, or arbor.

Foliage: The leaves are heart-shaped and green, turning a yellowish color in the fall before dropping.

Flowers: The small, fragrant flowers are creamy white and are borne in loose, cascading clusters. They appear in late summer or early fall and attract butterflies and other pollinators.

Sunlight: Silver Lace Vine thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day for best flowering.

Soil: It grows well in well-drained soil with average fertility. However, it can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils.

Watering: It prefers consistently moist soil, especially during the growing season. However, it can tolerate some drought once established. Hardy in zones 4-7.

Growing instructions for the Silver Lace Vine

The seeds have a period of dormancy. They can be planted outdoors in the spring or summer and they will germinate the next spring or they can be cold stratified to simulate winter conditions and to break their dormancy at any time of the year. 1. Soak the seeds in water for several hours. 2. Put the seeds in a ziplock bag. 3. Put the bag in the refrigerator and leave it there for 5-8 weeks. 4. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. 5. Put the soil in a pot. 6. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil. 7. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 8. Water the soil so that it is moist but not wet. 9. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
