In late spring, flattened clusters of white flowers appear—an elegant combination of showy sterile florets encircling smaller fertile ones—that attract a range of pollinators. These blooms give way to shiny, pendulous clusters of translucent red berries that persist well into winter, providing important food for birds, despite their bitter raw taste to humans. A cultivated form, V. opulus ‘Roseum,’ produces striking sterile “snowball” blossoms that create a dramatic display but lack fruit.
