Callicarpa dichotoma, commonly known as the purple beautyberry or early amethyst, is a species of beautyberry native to East Asia, particularly China, Korea, and Japan. It is cultivated for its ornamental value, primarily for its clusters of vibrant purple berries that adorn the plant in late summer and early fall. The berries are attractive to birds and other wildlife.
This deciduous shrub typically grows to around 3-5 feet in height and width, forming a rounded shape. It has small, pale pink to lavender flowers that bloom in the summer, followed by the striking purple berries in the fall. The foliage is green during the growing season, turning yellow in the autumn before dropping.
Purple beautyberry is often used in landscaping and garden design for its colorful berries, which add interest and visual appeal to gardens, especially in the autumn when many other plants are fading. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It's relatively low-maintenance and tolerant of a range of soil types. Hardy in zones 5-8.
