Amaryllis is the perfect choice for adding a touch of exotic beauty to any home. The vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers rise on 1- to 2-foot leafless stalks, bringing bold color to gardens and living spaces alike. Amaryllis bulbs can be purchased bare or planted, and offer a spectacular show of blooms in shades of red, pink, and white. These perennial herbs provide a majestic display of flowers for months and are ideal for gardeners of all skill levels. Brighten your home or garden with these stunningly beautiful sun-lovers. 'Large blooms' last for 3-4 weeks in full sun or bright shade and are drought-tolerant when the soil stays moist during the growing season. Plant bulbs neck up, 6 to 12 inches apart, in a humus-rich, well-draining soil mix for best results. Hardy in Zones 7-10, these plants will survive winter with proper mulching in cooler climates. For any humus rich, well-drained soil in a sunny spot. During dormancy keep tubers drier and at a minimum of some 15°C throughout the year. Seedlings are fast growing and may reach flowering size after two years only under appropriate conditions.
