Hippeastrum striatum, commonly known as the striped Barbados lily or Amaryllis striatum, is a species of flowering bulbous plant in the family Amaryllidaceae. Native to South America, particularly Brazil, it is cultivated worldwide for its stunning flowers and ornamental value.

Here are some key characteristics of Hippeastrum striatum:

Flowers: The flowers of Hippeastrum striatum are the main attraction, featuring striking trumpet-shaped blooms with a diameter of about 8-10 centimeters (3-4 inches). Each flower typically consists of six tepals (petals and sepals) that are white with reddish-brown stripes or markings, giving rise to its common name, "striped Barbados lily." The flowers are borne on tall, sturdy stems and bloom in late winter to early spring, depending on the growing conditions.

Foliage: The plant produces strap-like, glossy green leaves that emerge from the bulb base. The leaves grow in a basal rosette and provide an attractive backdrop to the colorful flowers.

Bulb: Like other members of the Amaryllis family, Hippeastrum striatum grows from a bulb, which stores nutrients to support the plant's growth and flowering. The bulb should be planted with about one-third of its height above the soil line in well-draining potting mix or garden soil.

Cultivation: Hippeastrum striatum is relatively easy to grow and can be cultivated both indoors and outdoors, depending on the climate. It prefers bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. During the growing season, water the plant regularly, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. After flowering, reduce watering and allow the foliage to die back naturally. The bulb can be divided and repotted as needed to propagate the plant.

Uses: Hippeastrum striatum is primarily grown for its ornamental value, adding a burst of color to gardens, containers, and indoor spaces during the flowering season. The flowers are also popular for cut arrangements and floral displays.

Growing Instructions

  1. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Put the mixture in a pot with drainage holes in the base.
  2. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet.
  3. Put the seeds on the soil.
  4. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil.
  5. Water the seeds.
  6. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade.
  7. Water them regularly so that the soil does not dry out. The seeds usually germinate in 1-3 weeks.
  8. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
