Kallstroemia maxima, commonly known as big caltrop or Mexican caltrop, is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Zygophyllaceae family and native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It typically grows in sandy or disturbed soils, along roadsides, coastal dunes, and open grasslands, thriving in hot, dry environments where few other species can persist. This sprawling plant has a low, spreading growth habit, with slender, hairy stems that can extend up to a meter long. The leaves are pinnately compound, composed of small, oval, opposite leaflets that give the foliage a delicate, fern-like appearance. During the warm months, Kallstroemia maxima produces bright yellow, five-petaled flowers that open in the morning and close by midday, attracting a variety of pollinators, particularly bees. The fruit is a spiny capsule that splits into hard segments, each containing a single seed, aiding in its wide dispersal. Adapted to drought and poor soils, it plays a role in soil stabilization and in providing seasonal nectar sources for insects. Kallstroemia maxima embodies resilience and adaptability, flourishing in sunbaked, nutrient-poor habitats while adding a touch of vivid color to otherwise barren landscapes.
