Panax ginseng is a slow-growing perennial plant native to East Asia, particularly Korea, China, and parts of Russia. Belonging to the Araliaceae family, it is renowned for its fleshy, forked roots, which are highly valued in traditional medicine for their purported adaptogenic properties—helping the body resist stress, fatigue, and disease. The plant typically grows 30–60 cm tall, with a single stem topped by a whorl of compound leaves and small greenish-white flowers that produce bright red berries. Panax ginseng thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soils under partial shade, often in forested areas with cool climates. The root, which can take several years to mature, contains bioactive compounds called ginsenosides, thought to influence energy metabolism, cognitive function, and immune response. Traditionally, it has been used to enhance stamina, improve concentration, and support overall health, making it a cornerstone of herbal remedies in East Asian medicine.
