Evodia daniellii, commonly known as the Korean evodia or bee bee tree, is a deciduous tree belonging to the Rutaceae family and native to Korea, China, and parts of eastern Asia. It is admired for its graceful form, attractive foliage, and exceptional value to pollinators, particularly bees, hence its common name. Typically reaching heights of 30 to 50 feet, this medium-sized tree features a broad, rounded crown with pinnate leaves composed of several glossy, dark green leaflets that turn a subtle yellow in autumn. In midsummer, when few other trees are in bloom, Evodia daniellii produces abundant clusters of small, creamy-white to pale yellow flowers that emit a pleasant fragrance and are rich in nectar, making it an important food source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. The blooms are followed by small, reddish-brown capsules that split open to reveal shiny black seeds, adding ornamental interest well into fall and winter. Adaptable and relatively easy to grow, the tree thrives in full sun and well-drained soils and is tolerant of urban conditions, making it suitable for streetscapes, parks, and pollinator gardens. Beyond its ecological benefits, Evodia daniellii offers year-round appeal through its textured bark, fine foliage, and wildlife-friendly features, embodying both beauty and biodiversity in cultivated and natural landscapes alike.
