Robinia pseudoacacia, commonly known as Black Locust, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States but widely naturalized across temperate regions worldwide. It typically reaches heights of 40 to 80 feet, forming an open, irregular crown with deeply furrowed, dark bark and stout branches often armed with short thorns. The pinnate leaves consist of 7 to 19 oval leaflets that display a fresh, bluish-green hue in spring and summer before turning a muted yellow in autumn. In late spring to early summer, Robinia pseudoacacia produces pendulous clusters of fragrant, pea-like white flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; these blossoms are followed by flat, brown seed pods that persist into winter. Known for its remarkable tolerance to poor, dry, or compacted soils, this tree enriches the ground through nitrogen fixation, making it valuable for land reclamation and erosion control. However, it can spread aggressively through root suckers, forming dense thickets that displace native vegetation in some areas. The wood of the Black Locust is exceptionally hard, rot-resistant, and durable, making it prized for fence posts, flooring, and outdoor structures. It is appreciated for its resilience, sweet-scented flowers, and ability to thrive where few trees can grow.
