Linaria vulgaris, commonly called butter-and-eggs or common toadflax, is a hardy perennial herbaceous plant known for its cheerful, snapdragon-like flowers and its ability to thrive in a wide range of environments. Native to Europe and western Asia but widely naturalized across North America, it typically reaches 1–3 feet tall, forming slender, erect stems lined with narrow, lanceolate leaves arranged alternately or in loose whorls. Its bright yellow and orange, two-lipped flowers—resembling tiny dragon faces with a pronounced nectar spur—bloom from late spring through fall and attract a variety of pollinators, especially bees. The plant spreads vigorously through both seed and creeping rhizomes, forming dense patches that often colonize roadsides, fields, railways, and other disturbed soils. Its foliage contains chemical compounds historically used in folk medicine for their purported diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. Durable, drought-tolerant, and visually distinctive, common toadflax thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, offering a long season of color.
