Gentiana andrewsii, commonly known as closed gentian or bottle gentian, is a perennial wildflower native to North America, particularly in moist meadows, prairies, and along stream banks. This plant is notable for its unique, deeply tubular, and tightly closed blue to violet flowers, which bloom from late summer into early fall. The unusual closed shape of the blossoms protects the reproductive parts and requires specialized pollinators, such as bumblebees, to force their way inside to access nectar and pollen. Gentiana andrewsii typically grows 30–90 cm (1–3 feet) tall, with upright stems and paired, lance-shaped leaves arranged oppositely along the stem. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Beyond its striking appearance, the plant contributes to pollinator support and adds architectural interest to native plant gardens, wildflower meadows, and restoration projects. Its compact growth and vibrant, jewel-toned flowers make Gentiana andrewsii both ecologically valuable and visually captivating.
