Lespedeza bicolor, commonly known as bicolor lespedeza or shrub lespedeza, is a deciduous shrub in the legume family (Fabaceae), native to eastern Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. It typically grows 3 to 10 feet tall and wide, forming an arching, fountain-like shape with numerous slender branches covered in small, trifoliate leaves. The foliage is a rich green during the growing season and turns a subtle yellow in autumn before dropping. During late summer to early fall, Lespedeza bicolor produces abundant clusters of pea-like flowers, usually pink to purple with darker markings, which are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. These blooms are followed by small, flattened seed pods that provide food for birds and wildlife. The plant is extremely hardy and tolerant of poor soils, drought, and heat, thriving in full sun and well-drained conditions. It is often used for erosion control, soil improvement through nitrogen fixation, and as a wildlife habitat plant. It is valued in managed landscapes for its resilience, attractive flowers, and ability to enrich the soil. Its combination of ecological toughness and ornamental beauty makes Lespedeza bicolor a useful species in cultivation.
