The Cabbage Tree Cordyline australis features sword-shaped gray-green leaves, making it a popular choice for houseplants. This tree is native to New Zealand and was introduced to the U.S. in the early 1800s. The fragrant white flowers bloom in late spring to early summer. Plant accordingly for a mature height of 20-30’ tall. Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis) is winter hardy in USDA Zones 9-12. It's adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, from boggy to dry, making it a great choice for many climates. When planted in containers, keep the soil moist in summer but reduce in winter, and place outside patios or bring indoors as a houseplant. The taproot requires a large and deep container for optimal growth.

Growing instructions for the Cabbage Tree

  1. Soak the seeds in warm water for several hours. 2. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Use a sterile seed starter mix, if available. It prevents soil pathogens from damaging the seeds and the seedlings. If not available, then make a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. 3. Put the soil in a pot. 4. Sow the seeds on the soil. 5. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 6. Water the seeds. Keep the soil moist but not wet. 7. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun. The seeds need warm temperatures (75 degrees F or warmer) to germinate. 8. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
