Anemone virginiana, commonly known as the tall thimbleweed or Virginia thimbleweed, is a species of herbaceous perennial plant in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It is native to eastern North America, ranging from the eastern United States to Ontario, Canada.

This plant typically grows in a variety of habitats, including open woodlands, prairies, and along roadsides. It is characterized by its tall, slender stems that can reach heights of up to 3 to 5 feet (about 1 to 1.5 meters). The leaves are deeply lobed and toothed, giving them a somewhat fern-like appearance.

Anemone virginiana produces white to pale pink flowers with yellow centers in late spring to early summer. These flowers are borne on tall, wiry stems above the foliage. After flowering, the plant produces distinctive seed heads composed of numerous elongated, cylindrical structures resembling thimbles, hence the common name "thimbleweed."

In terms of cultivation, Anemone virginiana prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial shade to full sun. It can be propagated by seeds or division.

This species provides aesthetic value in gardens and natural landscapes, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies with its flowers. It also serves as a food source for various wildlife species. Additionally, some Native American tribes historically used parts of the plant for medicinal purposes.
