The Groundsel Tree is an evergreen shrub or a small tree that is native to the southeastern United States. It is a member of the sunflower family and is one of the few woody species that grows in temperate regions. The eastern baccharis has an upright form with many ascending branches and thick, slightly succulent leaves. The leaves are ovate leaves and entire or with a few course teeth on the margins. It has small flowers and many seeds with white hairs. It grows in the coastal plain and is common in marshes, estuaries, old fields and barrier islands. It is very salt tolerant. It is occasionally cultivated and can be used as a hedge and as a specimen plant. Hardy in zones 5-11.
