Ipomoea leptophylla, commonly known as the Bush Morning Glory or Plains Morning Glory, is a perennial species native to the central Great Plains of North America, where it thrives in dry prairies, sandy soils, and open grasslands. Unlike many of its climbing relatives, this Ipomoea species grows as a low, bushy, non-twining shrub, typically reaching 2 to 3 feet in height and spreading 3 to 5 feet wide. It develops a massive, deep taproot that can extend several feet into the ground, enabling the plant to survive extreme drought and poor soil conditions. The narrow, linear leaves are a distinctive feature—long, slender, and grasslike—giving the plant an elegant, airy texture that blends beautifully with native prairie vegetation. From late spring through midsummer, Ipomoea leptophylla produces large, trumpet-shaped, lavender to pinkish-purple flowers with pale throats that open in the morning and close by afternoon. These blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, adding vibrant color to arid landscapes. The plant prefers full sun and well-drained, sandy or rocky soils, performing best in regions with hot summers and minimal water. Extremely hardy and long-lived once established, Bush Morning Glory is an excellent choice for xeriscaping, restoration projects, and native plant gardens. Its combination of resilience, deep-rooted stability, and ornamental beauty makes Ipomoea leptophylla a symbol of endurance in the environments of the American plains.
