Ipomoea × multifida, commonly known as the Cardinal Climber, is an annual vine admired for its brilliant red flowers and delicate, finely divided foliage. This hybrid species is a cross between Ipomoea quamoclit (Cypress Vine) and Ipomoea coccinea (Red Morning Glory), combining the best traits of both parents to produce a fast-growing, ornamental climber. The plant features slender, twining stems that can reach up to 3–6 meters (10–20 feet) in a single growing season, making it ideal for covering trellises, fences, arbors, and mailboxes. Its leaves are deeply lobed, forming elegant, fern-like shapes that add a soft, feathery texture to garden displays. From midsummer until frost, the Cardinal Climber produces a profusion of small, star-shaped, scarlet-red flowers about 2.5 cm (1 inch) across, with a flaring, trumpet-like form that glows vividly in sunlight. These nectar-rich blossoms are magnets for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, providing a valuable source of food in pollinator gardens. Ipomoea × multifida thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, preferring warm conditions and moderate moisture. It grows quickly from seed and is often used as a seasonal climber in temperate regions, where it dies back with frost but readily reseeds in favorable climates. Its combination of rapid growth, graceful foliage, and luminous red blooms makes the Cardinal Climber a cherished choice for adding vertical color, movement, and wildlife appeal to garden landscapes.
