Asimina parviflora, commonly known as the dwarf pawpaw or the smallflower pawpaw, is a species of shrub or small tree in the Annonaceae family, native to the southeastern United States. It typically grows in moist woodlands and along stream banks.

Smallflower pawpaw trees are relatively small, reaching heights of around 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters). They have smooth, grayish-brown bark and alternate, elliptical leaves that are dark green and glossy. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, typically greenish-yellow in color, and they bloom in spring before the leaves fully emerge. The fruit is similar to other pawpaw species, being a large, greenish-yellow berry with soft, sweet, edible flesh that contains large seeds.

This species is often grown for its ornamental value in gardens, as well as for its fruit, which is enjoyed by wildlife and humans alike. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and partial shade to full sun. Asimina parviflora is a close relative of the more well-known Asimina triloba, or common pawpaw.

Growing Instructions for the Dwarf Pawpaw

The seeds have a period of dormancy and need to be cold stratified to break their dormancy. The seeds are stored in a refrigerator to maintain viability so they have already been stratified. The seeds need to be planted when received or stored in a refrigerator until they are planted. 1. Fill a pot with potting soil. Use a pot that has drainage holes in the base. 2. Sow the seeds on the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. 3. Water the container and leave it to drain. 4. Put the pot in a warm, sunny area. 5. Water the pot regularly so that the soil is moist but not wet. The seed will normally germinate in 2-3 weeks, and the shoot will emerge in 2 weeks to 2 months. 6. The seedlings can be transplanted when they are a few inches tall.
