Jatropha gossypifolia, commonly called cotton-leaf physicnut, is a fast-growing tropical shrub or small tree that typically reaches about 6–10 feet tall and 4–8 feet wide in favorable conditions, though older specimens may occasionally approach 12 feet in height. The plant develops several upright, branching stems that are usually ½–2 inches thick, forming an open, rounded canopy. Its distinctive leaves are large, palmate, and deeply lobed, measuring roughly 4–7 inches across, with each lobe tapering to a pointed tip; the leaf stalks (petioles) are often 3–6 inches long and bear small glandular structures near their bases. New foliage commonly emerges with a purplish-red tint before maturing to a darker green or bronze shade. The clusters of small flowers form in terminal cymes about 2–5 inches wide, with individual blossoms measuring around ¼–⅜ inch across, usually deep red or purplish in color. After flowering, the plant produces three-lobed seed capsules roughly ½–¾ inch in diameter, which split open when mature to release several dark brown or black seeds about ⅜–½ inch long. The root system is moderately deep and spreading, allowing the shrub to tolerate drought once established. In warm climates the plant may remain evergreen and can spread to form thickets if unmanaged, with overall proportions generally maintaining a height-to-spread ratio close to 1.5:1 under typical growing conditions.
