Achlys triphylla, commonly known as vanilla leaf, is a species of flowering plant in the Berberidaceae family. It is native to western North America, particularly in forested regions from British Columbia to California.
Vanilla leaf is a perennial herbaceous plant that typically grows in dense clusters and reaches heights of around 15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches). It has large, three-parted leaves that are aromatic when crushed, emitting a sweet scent reminiscent of vanilla, which gives the plant its common name.
The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are arranged in slender spikes. The flowers are followed by clusters of small, dry fruits containing seeds.
Vanilla leaf is often found in moist, shaded areas of forests, where it thrives in rich, well-drained soil. It is commonly encountered in coniferous and mixed woodlands, where it forms dense mats on the forest floor.
In addition to its aromatic foliage, vanilla leaf has been used historically by Indigenous peoples for various purposes. The leaves were dried and used as a sweet-scented sachet or as a bedding material. They were also used in traditional medicine for their astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.
Today, vanilla leaf is sometimes cultivated in shade gardens for its attractive foliage and pleasant fragrance. It is valued as a low-maintenance ground cover that adds texture and interest to woodland landscapes. However, it is important to note that while vanilla leaf is non-toxic, it should not be consumed as it is not considered edible.
