Liquidambar formosana, commonly known as the Chinese sweet gum or Formosan sweet gum, is a deciduous tree native to eastern Asia, particularly found in China and Taiwan. It belongs to the Altingiaceae family, which also includes other species of sweet gum trees.

This tree typically grows to a height of 20 to 25 meters (65 to 80 feet) and has a pyramidal to rounded crown with glossy green, maple-like leaves that turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and purple in the fall, making it prized for its autumnal display. The leaves are typically star-shaped with five to seven lobes and serrated edges.

In addition to its ornamental value, Liquidambar formosana has economic significance in its native range. The sap of the tree can be tapped and used to produce a type of natural chewing gum, similar to that derived from its North American relative, Liquidambar styraciflua.

Chinese sweet gum is often planted as a shade tree in parks, gardens, and along streets in subtropical and temperate regions with mild climates. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate a range of soil types, it thrives in moist, fertile soils.

Like other species of sweet gum, Liquidambar formosana produces spiky fruit clusters that contain small, round capsules. These capsules release winged seeds that are dispersed by wind. The fruits can be messy when they drop in autumn, but they provide food for wildlife, including birds and small mammals.

Overall, Liquidambar formosana is valued for its attractive foliage, autumn coloration, and adaptability to a variety of growing conditions, making it a popular choice for landscaping in suitable climates.
