The Sugar Apple, or Sweetsop, Annona squamosa, is one of the most popular fruit trees of the tropics. It is cultivated for its abundantly produced, apple-like fruits. The fruits have a creamy, white, aromatic pulp that is smooth, fruity and custardy and it has a very sweet taste. The tree itself is a small tree with a short trunk and a broad, rounded or spreading canopy with pendant, medium green leaves. Fragrant flowers are produced in small clusters and they have the scent of jasmine flowers. The sugar apple is widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions where the related cherimoya cannot be grown. The cherimoya likes cooler climates but the sugar apple can be grown in warm and humid regions and in lowland tropical regions. Zones 10-12
