The Southern Blue Gum is an evergreen tree from Australia that has aromatic, blue-green leaves and showy flowers with many stamens. It is one of the most widely grown species of eucalyptus. It is cultivated in plantations for its lumber and for the essential oil in its leaves. The lumber is used for construction. The leaves are the main source of eucalyptus oil, which is used in perfumes, as a flavoring and for its medicinal properties. Leaves are used to make an herbal tea. It is grown as an ornamental tree in warm regions for its foliage, flowers and colorful bark. It has a fast growth rate and is drought tolerant. It prefers a Mediterranean climate but can be grown in humid tropical and subtropical regions as well. Hardy in zones 9-12.

Growing Instructions for the Southern Blue Gum

  1. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Use a sterile seed starter mix, if available. It prevents soil fungi from damaging the seeds and the seedlings. If not available, then make a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. 2. Put the soil in a pot. 3. Sow the seeds on the soil and lightly cover them with sand. 4. Water the seeds from underneath, by filling a plant tray under the container with water. Keep the soil moist but not wet. 5. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade. 8. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
