Brugmansia sanguinea, commonly known as red angel's trumpet, is an exotic flowering shrub or small tree native to the Andes mountains of South America, particularly in Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia, where it thrives in cooler, high-altitude environments. This evergreen species is renowned for its large, pendulous, trumpet-shaped flowers that range in vivid hues from deep red to orange and yellow, often with a greenish base and a flaring bell that can reach up to 8 inches in length. Unlike some other Brugmansia species, B. sanguinea lacks a strong fragrance but compensates with its dramatic coloration, which attracts hummingbirds as primary pollinators. The plant has a woody stem and can grow up to 10 to 20 feet tall under favorable conditions, with broad, dark green, slightly serrated leaves that add to its lush tropical appearance. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial to full sun, and while it is not frost-tolerant, it can be cultivated in containers and overwintered indoors in temperate regions.
