Black Cumin is an annual plant in the buttercup family that has delicate blue flowers with intricately branches green sepals below the petals. It is grown as an ornamental plant for its attractive flowers and for its edible seeds, which are used as a spice. It grows 8-12 inches tall. Leaves are medium green, finely divided and lacy. The flowers are on long stalks. They are light blue or white with 5 spreading petals. Some forms have flowers with numerous petals. The flowers are about 1 inch wide. The seed pods are light brown with 5 sections. The pods contain numerous small, black seeds. The seeds have an herbaceous aroma that is reminiscent of oregano. They have a spicy, nutty flavor and can be sprinkled whole or ground up on food. The seed oil can also be used on salads and other dishes. N. sativa is native to Asia and the Middle East. Hardy in zones 2-10.

Growing Instructions

Sow in spring through summer and in autumn. Nigella seeds can be sown indoors early in the year for transplanting to the garden once temperatures rise in spring. They can be sown directly where they are to grow in spring through to autumn. Ideally Nigella should be grown in a sunny part of the garden that has good drainage. They prefer well drained soil enriched with manure or compost ahead of planting, but will grow in most sites and soils and can be grown on light sandy soils.
